To enhance the capabilities of extension workers and field personnel in the livestock sector, the Department of Agriculture – Agricultural Training Institute – Regional Training Center 1 (DA-ATI RTC 1), in partnership with DA-Pangasinan Research and Experiment Center (DA-PREC) Sual, Pangasinan conducted the Training of Trainers (TOT) on Artificial Insemination (AI) for Small Ruminants on April 7-11, 2025 DA-ATI-RTC 1, Tebag East, Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan.

The training aimed to equip participants with the essential knowledge and skills in AI for small ruminants, enabling them to develop a re-entry plan and effectively implement AI technologies in their respective areas. A total of 27 AEWs from various municipalities of Region I completed the five-day training program.

The training covered a wide range of topics delivered through lectures, interactive discussions and hands-on practical exercises. Participants learned about the economic opportunities and challenges in the small ruminant industry, small ruminant production technologies including nutrition, breeding, and husbandry practices, and the anatomy and reproductive physiology of goats.

A key highlight of the training was the application of theoretical knowledge through practical exercises conducted at the DA-PREC Sual Goat Breeding Station, where participants performed actual AI procedures. They also practiced semen collection, extension, and storage, and learned to identify estrus signs and synchronize breeding cycles.

In addition, essential topics such as record keeping, as well as social technologies like extension communication, presentation, and facilitation skills were discussed. These are critical in enabling participants not only to apply the AI technologies but also to effectively share and transfer knowledge to farmers and other stakeholders.

Through this TOT, DA-ATI RTC 1 continues its mission to develop skilled trainers and practitioners who will play a vital role in the promotion and adoption of sustainable livestock technologies in the region.
