Baliangao, Misamis Occidental– Thirty (30) members of Baliangao National Irrigation System Association (BALMS ) gained firsthand insights into the Integrated Rice-Duck Farming System (IRDFS) during a visit to Ricky’s Duck Farm.
The activity served as the highlight of the Training on Integrated Rice-Duck Farming System, which showcased a sustainable approach that blends rice production with duck raising.
At the heart of the learning visit was a simple yet powerful statement by farm owner Ricky Formiento saying “the ducks are the farmers.” Formiento explained that beyond being a source of meat and eggs, ducks play a vital role once released into the rice paddies. Acting as natural laborers, they contribute to farm productivity by performing multiple functions that reduce the need for chemical inputs and manual labor.
As ducks forage in the fields, they feed on golden apple snails and harmful insects, helping control pests naturally. Their constant movement also disturbs weed growth, preventing weeds from taking root and competing with rice plants.
In addition, ducks play a crucial role in improving soil health through aeration and fertilization. As they paddle through the mud, they help aerate the soil while their droppings serve as a continuous source of organic nutrients that are directly absorbed by the rice roots.
The dual-crop nature of the system provides a safety net for farmers. By the end of the season, farmers harvest not only rice but also a healthy population of ducks ready for market, offering an additional source of income from meat and eggs.
