Training on Organic Vegetable sparks Young People’s interest in Backyard Gardening

Return Demonstration on Planting Seeds for Seedlings

Cagayan de Oro City---Intending to install an organic garden as source of food for consumption in an orphanage’s limited space, a total of 30 children from Calabrian Children Foundation (CCF) actively participated in the three-day Organic Vegetable Training conducted recently by the Career Development and Management Services (CDMS) of the Agricultural Training Institute-Regional Training Center X (ATI-RTC X).   

Speakers present during the training proper were from the ATI-RTC X and organic farming advocate Honorio Cervantes of Square Foot Garden. Among the engaging activities during the training proper included a return demonstration on planting seeds for seedlings and hands-on demonstration in making organic concoctions.

The said training is a component of the establishment of a community garden which will serve as their source of the orphanage’s food supply from September to December 2022, as well as in support to the country’s food sufficiency efforts headed by the Department of Agriculture (DA).    

Cagayan de Oro City Agriculturist Paterno Gonzales graced the opening program and signified the CAO support during the implementation of the said program. He encouraged the children to engage in agriculture while they are still young and able since agriculture nowadays needs young generation to engage in farming.

In her short message, BPI representative Apple Grace Mercado stressed that there are two important points she would like to remember by the children, which is the education and skills development for them to grow into a better person.

The Training on Organic Vegetable, which transpired from November 15-17, 2022, was a partnership endeavor with the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI)-Lapasan Branch and City Agriculture Office- Cagayan de Oro City. (From the reports of Moisa Niña C. Paglinawan and Franz Abegail Oranda)
