Panabo City, Davao del Norte – In line with its commitment to promote sustainable and climate-smart food production in urban and peri-urban areas, ATI-RTC XI successfully held a Training on Basic Hydroponics (Batch 1) under the National Urban and Peri-Urban Agriculture Program (NUPAP) from May 21 to 23, 2025, at its training center in Datu Abdul Dadia.

The three-day training brought together 28 Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs), Farmer-Leaders, and urban agriculture enthusiasts. Participants gained foundational knowledge and hands-on experience in hydroponic farming—a soil-less, climate-resilient, and space-efficient crop-growing method, ideally suited for urban environments.

Ms. Pauline Joy Reyes, NUPAP focal person, presented the rationale of the training and emphasized the importance of urban agriculture in enhancing local food systems and community resilience. Meanwhile, Ms. Merriel Bernardo of DA RFO XI introduced the participants to the programs and support services offered under NUPAP to strengthen urban and peri-urban agricultural initiatives in the region.

A key highlight of the training was the hands-on field activity at CAGAPE’s Crisp Green Farm, a thriving hydroponic farm in Panabo City owned by Ms. Eleanor M. Cagape, who also served as the resource speaker. She shared her journey, insights, and practical knowledge in managing a productive hydroponic system, greatly enriching the participants’ learning experience. 

Through interactive sessions, expert-led discussions, and immersive field experiences, the training created a dynamic and collaborative environment that encouraged participants to apply what they learned and promote urban agriculture in their respective communities. 

This initiative is part of the institute's broader commitment to climate-smart agriculture, contributing to the national goal of achieving food security and sustainability in urban and peri-urban areas.
