MATI CITY, Davao Oriental— Bananas are among the most consumed fruits globally and play a vital role in the world economy. Despite the promising prospects of Philippine bananas in both domestic and international markets, the industry faces significant challenges. Adverse weather conditions, flooding, pests, and diseases threaten to devastate large banana farms and plantations.
To address these challenges, the Agricultural Training Institute-Regional Training Center XI conducted a Training on Insect Pests and Diseases Management of Cardaba Banana from July 17-19, 2024, at Davao Oriental State University. It was participated by 31 agricultural extension workers (AEWs) , farmer leaders, and cooperative officers from the province.
The training covered various essential topics, including the current state of the banana industry in the Philippines, recommended banana varieties and their characteristics, identification and management of pests and diseases in Cardaba bananas, and the impact of climate change on banana production. A field practicum on the eradication and control of common diseases in Cardaba banana was also conducted at Sitio Tagbobolo, Brgy. Sainz, Mati City.
Upon completion of the training, participants are expected to apply their newly acquired knowledge and skills and share them with other farmers in their communities. In addition, the AEWs earned eight (8) Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points in agriculture.
This training initiative aims to empower banana farmers with the necessary tools to effectively manage pests and diseases, ensuring the sustainability and growth of the banana industry in the region.
