The third batch of the AgriSerbisyo on Wheels: Coconut Information Exchange was successfully conducted on May 05, 2026, in Maitum, Sarangani. This localized extension initiative focused on upgrading the technical knowledge and practical field skills of local coconut farmers, providing them with science-based methodologies to improve both crop productivity and farm profitability.
The program opened with a warm reception from Municipal Agriculturist Dinamae G. Unay, alongside strong messages of institutional support from Municipal Councilor Hon. Genaro Thomas Strong and Municipal Mayor Hon. James Mark Reganit. Their presence emphasized the local government’s commitment to prioritizing agricultural development and supporting the modernization of the municipal coconut industry. To introduce modern technology into the learning process, Ms. Marnil B. Del Monte, MPS II, delivered an interactive E-Learning Briefing. This session introduced participants to accessible digital learning platforms and online tools designed to give farmers immediate access to up-to-date agricultural data, training modules, and technical resources.
The core technical modules were led by agricultural experts John Lloyd Pracueles, Rey A. Prongco from the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) Sarangani-General Santos, and Mohaimen Malingco from the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist (OMAG) Maitum. The lectures covered three essential pillars of modern coconut enterprise management:
The discussion on Farm Diversification focused on the economic importance of intercropping and integrating alternative livelihood activities within coconut plantations. By cultivating secondary high-value crops and managing livestock beneath the coconut canopy, farmers can effectively spread market risks, optimize land utilization, and establish a more stable, year-round income stream.
The module on Good Quality Copra Production addressed post-harvest value addition. The experts detailed standardized harvesting, optimal drying, and sanitary handling techniques required to produce premium-grade copra. Adhering to these strict quality parameters prevents mold contamination and moisture degradation, ensuring local produce meets competitive market standards and commands higher prices from commercial buyers.
The final session covered Coconut Varieties and their Specialties, providing the farmers with a clear taxonomic and agronomic understanding of different coconut types. Participants learned to identify the distinct growth characteristics, soil suitabilities, and specific commercial uses of various dwarf, tall, and hybrid varieties, allowing them to make data-driven decisions when selecting planting materials for future farm rehabilitation or expansion.
Through this comprehensive mobile information campaign, the Agricultural Training Institute XII and its partners successfully delivered vital technical services directly to the grassroots. By equipping Maitum’s coconut farmers with both digital tools and practical production insights, the initiative establishes a stronger foundation for sustainable agribusiness development across Sarangani Province.
