VILLA KANANGA, Butuan City- The Agricultural Training Institute – Regional Training Center XIII conducted Training of Trainers on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) for Mango Production on June 14-17, 2022 at Prince Hotel.

The four-day training with 9 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) units, was attended by Sixteen (16) Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs) specifically the High Value Crops (HVC) coordinators from the five provinces of Caraga region.

Participants perform mock inspection activities and conducted hazard and risk evaluations, learned the proper way of handling pesticides, and identified insect pest and diseases in mango at Brgy. 5, Nasipit, Agusan del Norte.

Training highlights include lecture discussions on the different cultural management practices anchored with the Philippine National Standard Code for GAP Mango and GAP Certification Guidelines. The mango industry in Caraga region and the status and prospects along with marketing opportunities were presented by Romer Amante, Technical Staff of Department of Agriculture - Caraga Region.

On the hand, Mr. Lovender Carballo, from Syngenta Philippines Inc. discussed the topics on farm location, structure, and cultural management for mango from planting materials to harvesting. He then explained the proper way of fertilization, flower induction, and mango phenology. Moreover, Mr. Ryanwil Baldovino of the same office imparted his knowledge on integrated insect pests and diseases of mango production. He explained that the cicidfly is the most damaging insect pest in mango. Further, he discussed management and strategies for managing insect pests and diseases.

Ms. Catherine P. Sumagaysay, Product Stewardship of Syngenta Philippines Inc. discussed pesticide management, worker’s health, welfare, and safety in line with Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and discussed the importance of traceability and recall.

In addition, the participants performed mock inspection activities and conducted hazard and risk evaluations. They also learned the proper way of handling pesticides, and identified insect pests and diseases in mango during their actual demonstration at Brgy. 5, Nasipit, Agusan del Norte.
The said training was conducted by ATI-RTC XIII spearheaded by the Partnership and Accreditation Services Section (PASS) with Mary Jane Gonzaga, Development Management Officer I and HVCDP point person.
