LOS ANGELES, Butuan City - “I appreciate the fact that the resource person was someone who has experience in growing onions in our region because he was able to give practical advice from the field and share important tips on what we should watch out for,” said Janine P. Lambatan of LGU Buenavista.

This was among the impressions shared during the three-day Training on Onion Production titled “Bolstering Onion Management for Bountiful Agricultural Yield (BOMBAY)” held from April 21 to 23, 2026, at Golden Tara Hall, ATI RTC XIII in Los Angeles, Butuan City.

The training was attended by 29 participants, composed of 19 Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs), 2 personnel from the Department of Agriculture–Caraga, and 8 farmers from across the region.

The activity aimed to equip participants with technical knowledge and practical skills in sustainable bulb onion production. It also focused on strengthening their capacity to promote and implement onion farming technologies in their respective areas.

Discussions covered the current situation of the onion industry, value chain analysis, cultural management practices, and cost and return computation. Mr. Eric Ancheta of the City Agriculture and Veterinary Department (CAVD) of Butuan City provided expert insights on onion production. He emphasized that online production is a highly technical and labor-intensive enterprise requiring proper management for profitable yields.

Participants also underwent hands-on field practicum at the CAVD demo site, specifically in land preparation, soil tillage, bed formation, and proper seed sowing techniques, including spacing, depth, and distribution to achieve uniform germination.

At the end of the training, participants prepared re-entry plans that included establishing onion demonstration farms in their respective areas. These initiatives aim to apply the knowledge gained and encourage wider adoption of improved onion production practices, with monitoring scheduled six months after implementation.
