The training gathered 24 recipients of cacao nursery assistance from the Department of Agriculture (DA) under the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan (CFIDP). It aimed to improve their knowledge and skills in managing cacao nurseries and producing quality planting materials.
Mr. Jillbert Sumbidan of DA–RFO XIII discussed the current situation of the cacao industry. Ms Lita Amancia Yandug of BPI–NSQCS explained the topic on Mother Tree Selection, Nursery Accreditation, and Certification. Mr. Melanio Catayas Jr. of the City Agriculture and Veterinary Department in Butuan City discussed the materials needed for nursery establishment, the proper care and management of seedlings, and the importance of grafting as an essential propagation technique in cacao production.
To apply what they had learned, participants engaged in a hands-on practicum at the USAD Cacao Nursery in Mabuhay, Bayugan City, where they practiced soil preparation, bagging, seed extraction, and grafting.
After completing the training, participants gained the technical skills and confidence to manage sustainable cacao nurseries.
