HINATUAN, Surigao del Sur – Thirty-one coconut farmers completed the Training on Good Quality Copra Production and Processing conducted by the Agricultural Training Institute–Regional Training Center (ATI-RTC) XIII from April 20 to 22, 2026, at Amparitas Integrated Natural Farm.

The training aimed to strengthen participants’ understanding of producing high-quality copra and its role in supporting the coconut industry and the Philippine economy. It also equipped them with practical skills in proper copra processing, handling, and value-adding of coconut by-products.

The three-day course covered five key modules: Coconut Industry and Global Market Requirements; Existing Regulations on Copra and Coconut Oil Quality; Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP): Basic Concept and Importance; Traceability System; and Basics of Good Agricultural Practices in Coconut.

Engr. Ramon B. Barbosa, owner of the host farm, served as the resource person. He facilitated both lectures and hands-on activities, including a demonstration at his copra-drying facility, where participants were guided through the step-by-step process of producing quality copra.

Topics included identifying the right maturity of coconuts, proper dehusking, grading and segregation, splitting, drying, and storage. Participants also engaged in field practicum sessions where they applied the techniques themselves, gaining actual experience in copra processing. Different drying methods, including the use of a solar dryer, were also introduced.

The activity was facilitated by Mary Grace Salve, Media Production Specialist II, and Gerald Domingo, Technical Staff of ATI-Caraga.
