TAGBINA, Surigao del Sur - To foster sustainable practices and enhance livelihoods in the rural communities, the Agricultural Training Institute - Regional Training Center (ATI-RTC) XIII conducted the Training on Integrated Coconut-Chicken Production on May 21-23, 2025 at RBC Provincial Multiplier Farm.
The three-day activity was participated in by 30 farmer leaders, agri-enthusiasts, and representatives from partner agencies in the implementation of the Coconut Fund Industry Development Program (CFIDP). It aims to enhance the participants’ knowledge and skills in integrated coconut-chicken production.
Mr. Dino Adan Adormeo, Project Development Officer I of the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) Caraga, gave an overview of the CFIDP and economic opportunities of coconut, support for infrastructure development, and support services provided by the implementing agencies.
Moreover, Mr. Arman A. Ortiz, Senior Science Research Specialist of the Department of Agriculture (DA) - Tagbina Research and Experiment Station, explained the status and trends of the poultry industry and the importance of basic record keeping in health monitoring, breeding management, and performance and production tracking. Mr. Melchor Alvarado, Science Research Assistant of DA - Tagbina Research and Experiment Station, presented the topics on breeds and breeding, feeds and feeding, egg production, and egg incubation.
The Caraga Black Native Chicken Production of Caraga State University (CSU) was introduced by Prof. Thomas M. Austral Jr., highlighting the “Patani” breed’s characteristics, housing, feeding management, health and biosecurity, and the integration of native chicken with coconut farming.
“This training made me realize that success doesn’t always come from something big, but in simple things like the manokan sa kalubihan that will turn into something bigger. Thank you ATI Caraga for supporting local farmers and beginners like me and promoting sustainable practices through this training. ‘Kumikitang patok sa Pag-aalaga ng manok’ is not just a theme, it’s a vision I now believe in,” said Mr. Bernardo D. Otero, one of the participants from Silad, Mahogany, Butuan City.
Participants gained practical experience through a visit to the DA Tagbina, Surigao del Sur - Research and Experiment Station, where they engaged in hands-on activities.
