CARRASCAL, Surigao del Sur — Farmers, fisherfolk, local officials, and partner agencies gathered at the Carrascal Sports and Cultural Center on May 22, 2026, for the celebration of Farmers and Fisherfolks Month 2026, an event dedicated to recognizing the invaluable contributions of the agriculture and fisheries sector to the community’s growth and food security.

One of the highlights of the activity was the participation of the Agricultural Training Institute – Regional Training Center (ATI-RTC) XIII, represented by Ms. Ressell Angelie S. Fetalsana, Information Officer II and Gender and Development (GAD) Focal Person. During the Information and Education Session, Ms. Fetalsana conducted an orientation on the Digital Farmers Program (DFP), a flagship initiative with Smart Communications aimed at empowering farmers and fisherfolk through digital technology, online learning platforms, and improved access to agricultural information and services.

The session introduced participants to the importance of digital literacy in modern agriculture and fisheries, emphasizing how technology can help improve productivity, marketing opportunities, and climate resilience. Farmers and fisherfolk were encouraged to maximize ATI’s free online courses, extension support, and capability-building activities designed to strengthen their knowledge and livelihood opportunities.

Ms. Fetalsana also promoted the ATI’s various programs and services that cater to the needs of rural communities. The presentation highlighted ATI’s continuing commitment to providing accessible and relevant agricultural education for farmers, fisherfolk, youth, and rural-based organizations.

Part of the discussion focused on ATI’s Gender and Development (GAD) responsiveness in the implementation of its programs and activities. The importance of inclusive agricultural development by ensuring equal access to training, technologies, resources, and leadership opportunities for women and men in farming and fishing communities was highlighted. The discussion reinforced the value of participation, empowerment, and gender sensitivity in building stronger and more resilient agricultural sectors.

The event also featured sessions on disaster preparedness for farmers and fisherfolk, organizational strengthening, and updates from government agencies and partner institutions including the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC), PhilRice, PCA, NFA, and other stakeholders.
