BUTUAN CITY – One hundred coconut farmers from various municipalities and cities in Agusan del Norte and Surigao del Norte strengthened their understanding of quality copra production and processing during a Technical Briefing on Good Quality Copra Production and Processing Batch 1 held on May 26, 2026 in VCDU Prince Hotel, Villa Kananga.

The activity was conducted to raise awareness on proper copra production and processing practices that contribute to product quality, food safety, and market competitiveness. As the coconut industry continues to evolve, farmers are equipped with up-to-date knowledge and practical information to produce copra that meets industry standards and meets growing market demands.

The resource persons were Mr. Nervince Dave C. Docdoc, Agriculturist I of the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA)–Surigao del Norte, and Mr. Ernalyn E. Colon, Coconut Production Regulation Officer III of PCA-Caraga. They discussed the current status of the coconut industry at both the national and regional levels, emphasizing the important role of coconut farmers in sustaining the sector's growth and competitiveness.

The discussions also focused on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) in coconut farming and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) in copra processing. Participants learned the importance of maintaining proper production and processing standards to ensure product quality, improve marketability, and increase consumer confidence in coconut products.

A significant portion of the briefing highlighted quality and safety concerns in copra and coconut oil production, including the effects of Mineral Oil Saturated Hydrocarbons (MOSH) and Mineral Oil Aromatic Hydrocarbons (MOAH) on human health and the coconut industry. The session emphasized the need for proper handling, drying, storage, and processing methods to minimize contamination risks and ensure compliance with food safety requirements.
