BUTUAN CITY – “The training on Integrated Corn-Livestock Farming changed my impression of agriculture from being a laborious chore into a smart business model,” shared Ellen M. Marsada of Bayugan City, Agusan del Sur. For a young participant like her, she added that the activity opened a new perspective on farming—not simply as manual labor, but as a practical and sustainable enterprise where knowledge, planning, and innovation play a major role in success.

This realization reflected the broader objective of the Training on Integrated Corn-Livestock Farming conducted by the Agricultural Training Institute – Regional Training Center (ATI-RTC) XIII from May 13–15, 2026 at Olivier Ecovillage in Ampayon, Butuan City. The training gathered twenty-three corn farmers from Agusan del Norte and Agusan del Sur to strengthen their technical knowledge and practical skills in integrating crop and livestock production systems to improve farm productivity, reduce costs, and diversify sources of income.

The three-day activity emphasized how different farm components can work together as one system. Participants learned how corn production, livestock raising, feed formulation, silage production, and vermicomposting can complement one another to maximize available farm resources and minimize waste. Through this approach, farmers were encouraged to view their farms not as separate enterprises, but as interconnected systems capable of generating multiple economic opportunities.

Mr. Neptali V. Madarimot, Training Specialist II of ATI-RTC XIII, introduced participants to the principles and benefits of corn-livestock integration, crop management, and silage production. Discussions highlighted practical methods of improving feed availability while reducing dependence on costly commercial inputs. Participants also learned how properly managed silage can help ensure a stable feed supply during periods of scarcity and unpredictable weather conditions.

Moreover, the training also focused on vermicomposting, facilitated by Engr. Neil C. Capin, Training Specialist I of AT-RTC XIII. The session covered the proper establishment and management of vermicomposting facilities, including substrate preparation, moisture regulation, and harvesting techniques. To deepen their understanding, participants visited the vermicomposting facilities of ARDA Integrated Farm, where they observed actual operations and practical applications of organic farming technologies.

Animal nutrition, livestock health, and disease management were discussed by personnel from the City Agriculture and Veterinary Division of Butuan City, namely Dr. Jenny Mae V. Hernando, Ms. Rotchelie V. Salas, and Mr. Anthony M. Antoquia. Their sessions emphasized proper feeding practices, balanced nutrition, and disease prevention measures essential for efficient swine and poultry production. Participants were also introduced to common animal health concerns and management strategies that directly affect livestock productivity and farm profitability.

Meanwhile, the topic on feed production was handled by Ms. Shernelyn S. Palma and Mr. Algen Joy Aparece from the DA-Research and Experiment Station. The resource persons demonstrated practical feed formulation techniques using locally available materials, helping participants identify cost-efficient alternatives that can reduce production expenses while meeting the nutritional requirements of animals.

Participants engaged in workshops, demonstrations, and group activities where they developed proposed farm layouts and re-entry plans that they could implement in their own communities. These exercises allowed participants to connect technical concepts with actual farm situations and encouraged them to identify realistic improvements for their respective operations.

Further, Ms. Marsada noted that young people often hesitate to enter agriculture because of the perception that farming requires large capital and involves significant risks. However, she explained that the activity showed how passion, effort, and proper knowledge can become a strong foundation for building sustainable agricultural enterprises. She particularly appreciated learning about vermicomposting, describing it not only as a livelihood opportunity but also as a practical solution that contributes to environmental sustainability and long-term farm productivity.
