BUTUAN CITY – “The training made me realize that even simple improvements in farm management and record-keeping can have a significant impact on rice production and farm sustainability. Through continuous learning, field monitoring, and extension services, I can effectively support farmers in achieving better production and quality standards,” said Ms. Mildred Madelo, an Agricultural Extension Worker (AEW) from Barobo, Surigao del Sur, who participated in the Training of Trainers on Philippine Good Agricultural Practices (PhilGAP) for Rice Production.

Spearheaded by the Agricultural Training Institute – Regional Training Center (ATI-RTC) XIII, the five-day activity was conducted from June 8–12, 2026 and was attended by 27 participants composed of Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs) and farmers. The training aimed to strengthen the capabilities of AEWs by equipping them with the necessary knowledge and skills on PhilGAP standards for rice production, including the certification process and protocols, enabling them to better assist rice farmers in their respective local government units.

Resource persons from the Department of Agriculture – Caraga Region, Mr. Beb Palingcod and Mr. Euniel Atalo, discussed the Food Safety Act of 2013, the steps and procedures for GAP certification, record-keeping requirements, and Internal Control System (ICS) procedures. Meanwhile, Mr. Ernie Malazarte, Agriculturist II of ATI-RTC XIII, delivered lectures on hybrid rice production, covering its basic principles, production technologies, and management practices, as well as Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) and Integrated Pest Management (IPM).

Participants were also exposed to field exercises where they identified common weeds, insects, pests, and diseases affecting rice production. The activity provided them with practical experience in applying the concepts discussed during the lectures and strengthened their capacity to guide farmers in implementing PhilGAP standards.

Mr. Jann Carlstin Delos Reyes, a participant from the Local Government Unit of Loreto, Agusan del Sur, shared that producing high yields alone is not enough. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that rice is produced safely and meets quality standards to protect consumers and improve market opportunities for farmers.
