BUTUAN CITY — Around 70 rice farmers and youth from Barangay Tagabaca strengthened their knowledge on sustainable rice production through the “Know Your Rice: An Interactive Rice Information Campaign” and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) training conducted on April 22, 2026.

The activity was spearheaded by the Agricultural Training Institute – Regional Training Center (ATI-RTC) XIII in partnership with Caraga State University (CSU) through its College of Agriculture and Agri-Industries, highlighting a collaborative effort to promote climate-resilient and science-based farming practices in the region.

The campaign aimed to enhance food literacy and promote sustainability by engaging participants in interactive discussions and practical learning activities applicable both at home and in farming communities. It also emphasized the importance of rice farming as a vital and dignified source of livelihood while introducing ATI’s programs, services, and opportunities for farmers and the youth.

A major component of the activity focused on Integrated Pest Management (IPM), where participants were equipped with knowledge on identifying beneficial insects, understanding vertebrate pest management strategies, and applying pesticides properly and safely. These topics reinforced the importance of environmentally sound practices, farmer safety, and sustainable agriculture.

Resource persons from Caraga State University facilitated the technical sessions, including Ms. Clarisse Torayno, who discussed the diagnosis of pest damage and diseases; Ms. Ana Marie Rojo, who tackled common rice insect pests and their management; and Mr. Ray Angelo Salva, who presented proper pesticide use and safe application practices.

In addition, Ressell Angelie Fetalsana of ATI-RTC XIII introduced the institute’s programs and opportunities, encouraging participants to actively engage in agricultural initiatives and maximize available training and support services.

Through this initiative, participants gained practical insights and strengthened their capacity to adopt safer, more efficient, and environmentally responsible rice production practices, contributing to improved productivity and long-term agricultural sustainability in their communities.
