Thirty-one (31) rice farmers and agricultural practitioners successfully completed the Training on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in Rice Production โ 2 on June 15-19, 2026, at Central Luzon State University, culminating in a graduation ceremony that recognized their commitment to improving rice productivity through sustainable and science-based farming practices.
The training equipped participants with essential knowledge and skills on integrated pest management, including pest identification, ecological approaches to pest control, and the proper use of management strategies that minimize environmental impact while maintaining crop productivity.
Christian T. Ramos, Deputy regional Rice Coordinator, discussed the overview of the rice industry in the Philippines and Central Luzon, while Reinalyn C. Gulen, Senior Agriculturist, presented the concepts and principles of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and KeyCheck 7. Participants also learned about major rice pests and diseases from Trojane V. Soberano, Senior Science Research Specialist, as well as the use of ICT tools for pest management, KeyCheck 3, and crop diversification from Benigno Soriano Jr, TSS IV.
Furthermore, Rhey Mark S. Credo, Agriculturist II shared information on chemical control measures, while Jayson S. Baldoz, Project leader of Leads Agri Product Corp, discussed effective strategies for rat/rodent management and Golden Apple Snail management. Omie A. Carbonel, TSS IV, highlighted the importance of KeyCheck 1 and 2 in rice production. Through these discussions, participants gained a deeper understanding of integrated and science-based approaches to rice farming, equipping them with practical knowledge to improve productivity and effectively manage pests and diseases in their fields.
During the closing program, participants reflected on the valuable lessons they gained throughout the training. In her impression message, Merlita D. Abalos emphasized the importance of continuous learning and embracing innovation in agriculture.
โNapakanganda na sa ating mga farmers na tayo ay pumupunta o umaattend sa ganitong mga training. Hindi na po tayo pwedeng hanggang dito na lang, kailangan din nating umangat gamit ang mga makabagong teknolohiya na kung saan ay pwede nating i-apply sa ating bukid,โ she shared.
Her message underscored the need for farmers to adapt to modern agricultural technologies and practices to improve farm productivity, profitability, and resilience amid changing agricultural conditions.
The successful completion of the training marks another step toward empowering rice farmers with the knowledge and skills needed to make informed crop management decisions, reduce unnecessary pesticide use, and promote sustainable rice production.
As the graduates return to their respective communities, they are expected to apply and share the knowledge they acquired, contributing to the development of a more productive and environmentally responsible rice farming sector.
