A total of 30 Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs) and farmers enhanced their knowledge and skills in the proper operation, safety practices, and basic maintenance of commonly used rice machinery through a five-day Training on Operation, Safety, and Maintenance of Rice Machinery on March 9-13, 2026, at Parang Beach Resort, Brgy. Parang, Calapan City, Oriental.

During the training, participants gained a deeper understanding of rice farm mechanization,  including its role in improving rice productivity, the different types of machinery, their components, and functions. They also acquired knowledge on safety and occupational health practices, machinery maintenance and troubleshooting, and various extension strategies for training farmers.

As part of the hands-on activities at the Sta. Cruz Farmers Association Techno Demo Site, participants operated a four-wheel-drive tractor, rice combine harvesters, and both walk-behind and riding-type transplanters. They also observed the operation of a mechanical dryer, applying standard operating procedures and safety protocols in a real field setting. Moreover, participants engaged in micro-teaching presentations, which helped enhance their communication and presentation skills.

Engr. Karen T. Vicente, Agriculturist II of ATI-MIMAROPA; Engr. Mark Keylord S. Onal, Instructor at Mindoro State University–Main Campus; and Engr. Jefte D. Bay-ongan, Engineer IV from the Provincial Agriculturist’s Office – Agriculture and Biosystems Engineering Division, served as resource persons for the training.

Mr. Aeron Joshua M. Morante, one of the participants, shared that the training provided him with a valuable opportunity to broaden his knowledge and skills, especially as a newly hired AEW.

As the training concluded, participants committed to applying what they had learned in their respective areas to promote the safe and efficient use of rice machinery and to share their knowledge with fellow farmers and stakeholders.
