“Akala ko ang Black Soldier Fly ay peste, pero ito pala ay asset,” said Mr. Nestor A. Rodriguez, one of the participants who attended the Training on Black Soldier Fly (BSF) Production Technology for Agricultural Extension Workers held on March 6-7, 2024 at Lola’s Healthy Farm, Magsaysay, Occidental Mindoro.
The BSF (Hermetia illucens) is far from being an ordinary fly. This extraordinary insect might just hold the answer to the soaring costs of feeds and fertilizers, a pressing concern for many farmers. BSF larvae offer an excellent source of protein, making them an excellent feed for various farm animals including poultry, pigs, and even fish. Moreover, they play a crucial role in waste management, efficiently consuming biodegradable materials.
Mr. Nelson Gabutero, an LSA cooperator of Gabutero Organic Farm and one of the pioneering practitioners of BSF production technology in Mindoro, shared his knowledge and experiences through engaging lectures and hands-on activities. The 19 participants were thoroughly impressed and grateful not only for the theoretical learning but also for the practical application. Beyond the technical aspects, they explored the economic viability of BSF production, as they were taught how to compute its return on investment.
The training concluded with heartfelt appreciation from the participants for the opportunity to learn about BSF technology. Pledging to spread awareness, they vowed to impart their acquired skills and knowledge to their clientele. To kick-start their efforts, each participant received cultured BSF and larvae as starter kits for their demonstration areas.
With its potential benefits in agriculture, many are expected to engage in BSF farming as a cost-effective, innovative, and environmentally sustainable practice.
