To enhance the knowledge and skills of farmers and Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs) in the establishment of cassava nurseries and the proper propagation of planting materials, the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) in MIMAROPA spearheaded the Training on the Establishment of Cassava Nursery and Planting Materials Propagation at the Wency Amor Hotel, Buenavista, Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro on March 18-20, 2025.

Mr. Joel Ryan R. Pagdato, ATI-MIMAROPA Corn Point Person and Dr. Ramil D. Atienza, Assistant Professor IV of Mindoro State University, served as resource persons during the training. In their lecture, they discussed topics including principles and importance of cassava nursery establishment and planting material propagation; proper site selection; effective nursery management; selection of high-quality planting materials; best practices in cassava propagation, such as cutting, handling, and stem cuttings; high-yielding cassava varieties that are pest-resistance and suitable for local conditions; and strategies for disease prevention, pest control, and climate-resilient farming practices.

The highlight of the training was the field visits to Brgy. San Nicolas, Sablayan, where participants had the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities. During the hands-on activity, they learned the proper techniques for selecting planting materials, cutting, and planting cassava. Moreover, they identified common pests and diseases affecting cassava crops and discussed strategies to mitigate these issues to save the cassava industry.

A total of 31 AEWs and farmers successfully participated in the training.
