PILI, Camarines Sur- Twenty-two (22) beneficiaries of the Integrated National Swine Production Initiatives for Recovery and Expansion (INSPIRE) Program from the Provinces of Camarines Sur and Camarines Norte have undergone training called ‘Training on Swine Production for Integrated National Swine Production Initiatives for Recovery and Expansion (INSPIRE) Program Beneficiaries.’, They were endorsed by the Department of Agriculture-Regional Field Office 5 as the lead in implementing the INSPIRE Program through the National Livestock Program. The training program mainly focused on organizational management and various swine farm operation and management.
The resource persons were from the DA-RFO 5, ATI-RTC 5and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Outputs of the training included 17 Action Plans to be monitored by ATI-RTC 5 Livestock Team. IEC Materials, seeds, and e-copy of presentation materials were distributed to the participants.
Mr. Roberto B. Santos, Jr. ATI-Bicol Project Evaluation Officer, and the project officer of the training. presented an overview of the training. Ms. Vivien V. Carable, Assistant Center Director of ATI Bicol, and Dr. Marissa E. Guillermo, Regional Livestock and Poultry Program Coordinator of DA-RFO 5 shared their message during the opening program. Dr. Marissa E. Guillermo shared the overview of the INSPIRE Program. Ms. Annielyn Panerio, General Manager of the Camarines Sur Multi-purpose Cooperative, served as speaker for the topic- Strengthening Organizational Culture”. She highlighted during her discussion the following: Understanding the Organization its Purpose, Work Facilitating Collaborative Processes, and Communicating Values. The workshop was also part of her discussion, where he let the participants create an organizational structure that will benefit the INSPIRE Program.
Mr. Marianito A. Tesorero, DA-RFO 5’s Senior Science Research Specialist II, discussed the introduction to swine production, highlighting updates on the swine inventory, constraints of swine production, and investments in swine production and its economic gains. Dr. Salvadora M. Gavino, DA-RFO 5’s Senior Agriculturist, discussed the breeding and stock management for swine, highlighting the following: breeds and breeding, breeding requirements, stock management including housing requirements, and pig pens.
On the second day, Mr. Ronnie T. Purisima, DA-RFO 5’s Technical Staff, shared his ideas regarding feeds and feeding, highlighting pig nutrition, types of feeding and feeding requirements, and water management. He also added discussions on feed formulation, and the participants requested separate training. Dr. Jomar Azada, DA-RFO 5’s Technical Staff, discussed the topic of animal health care for swine. He emphasized the common swine diseases, signs, and symptoms, health management practices, vaccination deworming program, and herd and sow management
Mr. Tesorero discussed biosecurity and the classification of pig farms highlighting biosecurity and farm sanitation, and farm personnel hygiene. Through a workshop, participants illustrated the location of their farms and the current biosecurity measures being implemented. They were taught biosecurity protocols.
Ms. Wibelle Ann Ayab, DA-RFO 5’ Technical Staff, talked about farm records and recording, and Dr. Rosela A. Tenerife of DA-RFO 5 Regulatory Division, addressed the topic of Regulatory Facility Registration. Dr. Tenerife shared their office’s mandates and offered the participants various services related to their function.
On the last day, Dr. Cristopher Dela Cruz, Project Field Assistant of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, discussed the wean-to-finisher topics. He shared ideas based on his experience traveling abroad to a swine farm. He was able to share his expertise on swine production, and the participants were able to clarify technical-related concerns regarding production and management. Mr. Neil Francis Bordon, DA-RFO 5’s Agriculturist II, facilitated the marketing and market linkage discussion. He also shared the Agribusiness and Marketing Division (AMAD) mandates. He also assisted the participants regarding the registration requirements as part of their services offered. Lastly, Mr. Michael D. Villezar shared discussions on swine production and its impact on climate change.
As part of the significant training requirements, the participants submitted action plans that ATI will monitor. During the closing program, selected participants shared expressions of learnings and insights. Assistant Director delivered her closing message.
The training was held at the ATI Training Hall and Dormitory in Brgy. San Agustin, Pili, Camarines Sur last March 21-23, 2023.
