Meriam Mae Severino, Agriculturist II from PCA-Negros Occidental, conferred regarding the alarming effects of Coconut Scale Insects. She said, “Coconut Scale insect is one of the biggest problems in the coconut industry here in Negros Occidental. CSI can cause yellowing of leaves, wilting, premature nut fall, and low yield”. She added that the CSI’s presence in the region was in Bago City during the pandemic and has spread to nearby cities and municipalities. So far in Region VI, Coconut Scale Insects only infested Negros Occidental.

Teddy A. Cañete, Slow Food Champion in the Asia-Pacific Region and Owner of Sugar Valley Farm, expressed his disappointment because CSI infested most of his coconut crop. To help the government in combating CSI, Cañete is looking forward to setting up his own Biocontrol Laboratory.

This training course aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of the farmers on crop protection with a focus on coconut scale insect (CSI) control and management.
