ATI REGION 6 AND PAGASA GATHER AEWS FOR TRAINING AND WORKSHOP ABOUT CLIMATE

To eliminate the gap of technicalities between the users and the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) about the weather and climate patterns in the Philippines, the ATI Region 6 with the mentioned agency collaborated to launch and hold the Training on KlimAgrikultura at INA Farmers Learning Site and Agri-Farm Inc., Agcuyawan Calsada, Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo last March 31 to April 4, 2025. 

From only 25 agricultural extension workers as target participants, 33 participants attended this five-day event with the objective of learning about weather and climate and how they affect the agriculture sector.

The resource speaker and the participants discussed and explained a certain topic during their discussion.

As PAGASA continues to update and craft services for the benefit of agriculture, fisheries, water, energy, tourism, and others in the country, their services include explaining and giving every Filipino a chance to learn and understand weather.

Additionally, as the Department of Agriculture’s capacity builder, knowledge bank, and catalyst, the ATI Region 6 is expected to be a channel in delivering services, information, and experiences to its partners, stakeholders, farmers, and fishermen.

The equipment they use during the conduct of the training to further understand the weather and climate.

During the training, the participants are exposed to lessons such as Understanding KlimAgrikultura, Hydrometeorological Hazards, Crop Climate Calendar (C3), Weather Forecast, Climate Services: Seasonal Climate Forecast, Observed Climate Trends and Projected Climate Change, Climate Resilient Technologies, Verbal Decision Analysis (VDA), Rapid Climate Decision Analysis (RCDA), Presentation and Facilitation Skills, and Microteaching.

In order to gain expertise, resource persons from ATI Region 6, Local Government Units, and PAGASA were present to share their expertise, namely Rodel R. Leyson, Training Specialist II, ATI-RTC6; Ferdinand L. Rubin Jr., Weather Specialist I, DOST-PAGASA; Liela A. Rosbero, Senior Agriculturist, LGU-Passi City; and Ricky S. Dador, Weather Observer II, LGU-Dumangas.

The five-day event has a general objective of “At the end of the five (5) days training the participants shall be able to provide guidance and expertise to the farmers to effectively utilize the weather and climate information in their farming activities.”

On the other hand, a participant, Ms. Ann Sherly H. Gurrobat of LGU – Balasan, Iloilo said “this training was an eye-opening experience that deepened my understanding of how climate affects agriculture. It introduced practical tools like the Crop Climate Calendar, Verbal Decision Analysis and the Rapid Climate Decision Analysis, which are the essential for helping farmers make informed decisions and I was impressed by the dedication of our weather speacialists and the advanced tools (instruments) they both use in manual and automated data gathering just to support agricultural planning.”
