TALISAY CITY, Negros Occidental – ATI Region 6’s new training program, KlimAgrikultura and Climate Workshop, accommodated its second batch of trainees last February 13-17, 2023, at Nature’s Village Resort. The said training supports the United Nation’s (UN) Sustainable Development Goal 13, which promotes Climate Action to combat climate change and its impacts.

KlimAgrikultura aims to create a pool of AEWs who can effectively provide guidance and expertise to utilize weather and climate information in their farming activities. Sixteen participants composed of Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs) from different municipal Local Government Units and three from the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist attended the climate workshop.

In the five-day course of lectures and workshops, participants learned about Hydrometeorological Hazards, Crop Climate Calendar, Weather and Seasonal Climate Forecasting, observed Climate Trends and projected Climate Change, Climate Resilient Technologies, as well as discuss Verbal Decision Analysis (VDA) and Rapid Climate Decision Analysis (RCDA). At the end of the training, the participants conducted the microteaching session as part of their assessment.

“When I heard about the KlimAgrikultura training, I was hoping to know how to help farmers adapt to changing climate and weather in our province. I have learned about the climate trends in the country. As an AEW from the province, I am now thinking about helping our farmers change cropping patterns according to their local needs, situation, and geography to reduce the damages and risks of typhoons on their crops,” said Joelyn G. Librado, one of the participants.

The participants must demonstrate their learnings as they implement their re-entry plans. The program also aims to substantially contribute directly to Sustainable Development Goal 2, also known as Zero Hunger, wherein food security and improved nutrition are achieved through sustainable agriculture.
