Pilar, Bohol — Fourteen on-the-job (OJT) students from the College of Agricultural Sciences of the Bohol Island State University (BISU) in Bilar, Bohol Campus successfully participated in the Regional Training of Trainers on Vegetable Production, held from February 17-28, 2025, at the Labonite Integrated Farm in San Isidro, Pilar, Bohol.

The primary objective of the students' participation was to gain a comprehensive understanding of the value chain in vegetable production and to observe firsthand the role of Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs) in training and extension activities. By immersing themselves in this training program, the students were able to better grasp the technical and practical aspects of vegetable farming, which will aid them in their future careers as agricultural professionals.

The OJT students joined the program alongside AEWs and Learning Site for Agriculture (LSA) cooperators, contributing to a dynamic learning environment. As one of the batches affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, where their studies were mostly conducted in a blended learning format (online and limited face-to-face classes), this hands-on experience was a unique and invaluable opportunity for them.

The students expressed their deep appreciation for being part of this in-person training, recognizing it as a vital part of their education and career development. It provided them with not only knowledge on vegetable production techniques but also insights into the practical challenges and solutions faced by farmers and agricultural extension workers on the ground.

The participation of BISU-Bilar students underscores the importance of bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world agricultural practices. By understanding both the science behind vegetable farming and the role of AEWs in supporting farmers, the students are better prepared to contribute to the advancement of agriculture in Bohol and beyond.

With the success of this training, the students from BISU-Bilar are more motivated than ever to apply what they’ve learned and continue their journey towards becoming effective agricultural professionals. The collaboration between ATI-RTC 7 and educational institutions like BISU plays a crucial role in developing the next generation of agricultural leaders.
