BAYBAY CITY, Leyte - The Agricultural Training Institute–Regional Training Center 8 (ATI-RTC 8) successfully conducted a Training on Chicken Production from May 12–14, 2026, at ATI-RTC 8, VSU, Baybay City, Leyte. The three-day training aimed to help agricultural extension workers and farmer-beneficiaries gain practical skills in raising and managing free-range chickens as a source of additional income and sustainable livelihood.
The activity focused on hands-on and easy-to-understand learning sessions designed to guide participants in setting up and managing multiplier farms. These farms are designed to help farmers raise and produce chickens at a lower cost while making poultry production more profitable and better suited to local communities.
Topics discussed included the prospects of the chicken industry, proper chicken production practices, farm recording systems, and nutrition and feeding management. The training emphasized simple but effective techniques that farmers can easily apply in their own backyard or community-based poultry projects.
One of the participants, Ms. Analiza A. Caducio, shared how the training helped her in her work and in supporting farmers in their community:
“This training on chicken production, especially free-range chicken, was very helpful and practical to us. Our LGU is one of the beneficiaries of the Free- Range Chicken Project under the Livestock Economic Enterprise Program (LEED). It provided us with clear knowledge, skills, and proper management, including Housing, Vaccination, Brooding, Disease prevention, Feeds formulation, and Natural Alternatives (like antibiotics & vitamins). Since this project was a multiplier, we needed them to distribute chicken to the farmers to help them to venture into poultry production. As an Agriculture Extension Worker (AEW) of our LGU. It helps improve our skills and confidence to share our learning with the farmers for their willingness to invest in free-range farming in a sustainable and profitable livelihood.”
The three-day training gathered 29 farmer-beneficiaries of the Department of Agriculture’s Livestock Economic Enterprise Development (LEED) Free-Range Chicken Project from different municipalities across the region, together with their municipal agriculture representatives.
Overall, the activity strengthened ATI-RTC 8’s continued support to farmers by providing practical learning opportunities that can help improve income, promote sustainable livestock farming, and encourage more communities to engage in free-range chicken production.
