BAYBAY CITY, Leyte - The ATI-RTC 8 successfully conducted two batches of training on Harvest and Postharvest Management on April 13–17, 2026 (Batch 1) and April 20–24, 2026 (Batch 2).
The activity was designed to enhance the technical competencies of Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs) on appropriate harvest and postharvest practices in rice production, with emphasis on minimizing postharvest losses and improving grain quality.
A total of 29 AEWs participated in Batch 1, while 26 AEWs completed Batch 2.
The training covered key concepts on farm mechanization and its role in improving operational efficiency and productivity in rice production systems. Participants were oriented on the contribution of mechanization in reducing labor requirements and mitigating postharvest losses.
Technical discussions focused on the identification of proper harvest timing to optimize yield and maintain grain quality. The sessions also included topics on different harvesting systems, drying principles, and appropriate postharvest handling and processing practices to prevent deterioration and ensure production of high-quality rice.
Hands-on exercises were conducted to strengthen the practical competencies of the participants. AEWs were trained on the operation and basic parts identification of a rice combine harvester, batch-type recirculating dryer, multi-stage rice mill, and single-pass rice mill. The training also provided exposure to the sequential processes involved in rice drying and milling operations.
In her statement, Ms. Lanie Lynn Y. Amamio of LGU Cabucgayan, Biliran emphasized the relevance of the training to extension work:
“As an AEW, Postharvest Training is highly valuable and relevant to my field work. It enhanced my understanding of proper harvest techniques, including the right timing, handling, and use of appropriate tools to minimize losses and maintain crop quality. The training also emphasizes the importance of postharvest practices such as drying and storage processing. I realized that a significant portion of farmers' losses occurs after harvest due to improper handling and lack of knowledge in storage management. Through these training sessions, I gained practical skills that I can share with our farmers to help improve their productivity and reduce postharvest losses.”
The conduct of the two batches of training reinforces ATI’s mandate to strengthen the capabilities of AEWs in delivering science-based technologies and services to farmers, particularly in improving rice postharvest systems and reducing production losses.
