Baybay City, Leyte — The Agricultural Training Institute – Regional Training Center VIII (ATI-RTC 8) conducted the Training on Animal Waste Management on September 17–19, 2025 at Visayas State University, Baybay City, Leyte.
The activity aimed to equip participants with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in the proper management and utilization of animal waste. Proper waste management helps reduce environmental pollution, safeguard public health, and provide nutrients needed for crop production, thereby reducing dependence on commercial fertilizers.
A total of 28 participants mostly agricultural extension workers from various provinces in Region 8 and farmers participated in the training. Several technologies were introduced, including biogas digesters, dry cleaning methods, vermicomposting, mortality composting, and the PUM Innovative Pig Pen design.
Among these, the PUM Pig Pen design gained significant interest for its unique approach to separating manure, urine, and wastewater. This separation allows waste components to be reused as valuable farm inputs. The design is simple, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly, making it a practical option for sustainable livestock management.
The dry-cleaning method was also highlighted for its affordability and ease of use, especially for backyard or small-scale farmers.
“Animal waste management is essential for maintaining a healthy environment and sustainable farming”. explains Dr. Franco Noriel Pampanga, a participant from LGU- Borongan, Eastern Samar. He further explained what he learned during the activity. One, is that proper handling and treatment of animal waste helps reduce pollution, prevent the spread of diseases, and create useful by-products like compost and biogas. “Attending this training gives as new knowledge that we could use in our breeding farm. Thank you ATI -RTC 8 for giving as this opportunity”.
As an agricultural extension worker, Dr. Venny Joseph Andag, also from Boronga, acknowledges that animal waste management is a vital part of promoting sustainable and productive farming. “Proper management not only protects the environment but also helps farmers maximize the value of their resources by turning waste into useful products like compost and biogas. Additionally, this training could help us as an agricultural extension worker in promoting proper waste management in terms of helping our environment and mitigate the effect of climate change into our community.”
The training forms part of ATI’s program to strengthen the capabilities of agriculture and fisheries stakeholders in climate change adaptation and readiness. Through these initiatives, ATI promotes responsible waste management and utilization, contributing to a cleaner environment, improved farm operations, and healthier communities.
