Macrohon Farmers Gain Skills in GAP-Anchored Jackfruit Production

MACROHON, Southern Leyte— Thirty jackfruit farmers from various barangays in Macrohon, Southern Leyte, strengthened their knowledge and skills in good agricultural practices (GAP)-anchored jackfruit production and post-harvest operations during a three-day training held from July 28 to 30, 2026.

The second batch of the Training on Jackfruit Production and Post-harvest Operations aimed at equipping participants with practical techniques for producing quality jackfruit while promoting proper farm management and post-harvest practices.

The training covered the jackfruit industry profile in the Philippines, the importance of pest and disease surveillance, and the Philippine Good Agricultural Practices (PhilGAP) standards. Participants were also introduced to the four major aspects of PhilGAP, the stepped GAP training approach, key elements of GAP, and the process of obtaining GAP certification.

Emphasis was also given to the production of quality jackfruit, with discussions focusing on the identification and management of major pests and diseases affecting jackfruit plantations. Participants also learned about maturity indices and the proper techniques for harvesting and handling jackfruit after harvest to help maintain fruit quality and reduce losses.

After classroom discussions, the farmers shared their own experiences and practices in jackfruit production. Their exchange of field experiences provided opportunities to discuss challenges commonly encountered in their farms and identify practical approaches that could be adapted to their respective areas.

The training also featured hands-on field activities designed to turn the lessons into actual farm practices. Participants performed essential orchard management activities, including maintenance pruning and fruit bagging, allowing them to practice techniques that can help improve tree management and fruit quality.

Participants also gained practical experience in establishing jackfruit plantation. They did field layout and planting of jackfruit seedlings based on the recommended production practices discussed during the training.

“Big thank you for the opportunity to attend this training especially with the field practicum.” Mr. Dione Rin shared his experience during their hands-on activities especially on pruning and planting. “I will definitely apply the information in my farm and share it to others as well.” He closed.

The combination of technical discussions, farmer-to-farmer knowledge sharing, and field exercises gave the participants a more practical understanding of GAP-anchored jackfruit production—from establishing and maintaining the orchard to protecting the crop and ensuring proper harvesting and post-harvest handling.
