PALO, Leyte – Twenty-four (24) Waraynon Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs) from various municipalities across Leyte strengthened their capacity in digital rice farming advisory through the Training on Rice Crop Manager Advisory Services (RCMAS) held on April 14–17, 2026 in Palo, Leyte.
The four-day training equipped participants with essential knowledge and skills in utilizing RCMAS, a digital platform designed to support data-driven decision-making in rice production. On the first day, participants were introduced to the system’s interface and features. They created user profiles through the RCMAS registration site and practiced encoding farmer and farm lot information in the test platform, including the use of GPX IDs for accurate mapping and future data uploads.
The second day focused on understanding RCMAS-generated recommendations. Participants were guided through the questionnaire process, allowing them to familiarize themselves with each interview question and effectively communicate recommendations to farmers. Discussions also highlighted the science behind the platform, particularly Site-Specific Nutrient Management (SSNM), reinforcing the importance of precise fertilization practices. A refresher on the use of GPS handheld devices was also conducted in preparation for field activities.
Hands-on exercises were carried out in Brgy. Zone 3, Sta. Fe, Leyte, where participants engaged with local farmers, including members of the BAZOFA. Activities included farmer interviews, farm lot registration, GPS-based area measurement, and the generation of RCMAS recommendations based on gathered data. “The field activity was a challenge because I got to measure the same field thrice because it couldn't be uploaded for the first two tries.” exclaimed Loreto Angelique Terrenal, a participant from La Paz, Leyte. For her, she had a hard time using the GPS device and had to do her farm measurement a couple of times. She still saw that the training was helpful. “It had a good balance of lectures and hands-on activities. It provided practical knowledge of the Rice Crop Manager Advisory Service which will be useful in assisting farmers and improving rice production in the community.” she added.
On the final day, participants were oriented on the Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) tool, a key feature that will support them in tracking extension interventions and preparing re-entry plans tailored to their municipalities. Participants who completed the training are eligible to receive 7.00 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credit units for Licensed Professional Agriculturists.
“As someone who has no knowledge about RCM, I am thankful to be part of this training.” shared Juilie Ann Cerna, an AEW from Javier, Leyte. “After the 4-day training, I see RCM not just a tool, but as a way to uplift the lives of our farmers.” For her, the tool created an impact on farmers making it a great help to them especially in their farming practices, and their management. “As an AEW, it is very relevant to my role because I realized that the effectiveness of this system does not rely solely on the system. It is on us - our commitment as extension workers to guide the farmers on the generated recommendation, to actually collect the data.”
