Tilapia is one of the most important sources of livelihood and nutrition for many communities in Eastern Visayas, yet much of the harvest is sold fresh, limiting its shelf life and market value. Recognizing the potential for income generation and improved food security, the Agricultural Training Institute – Regional Training Center 8 (ATI-RTC 8) conducted a three-day hands-on training titled Tilapia Transformed: Elevating Quality and Value through Processing, held on September 17–19, 2025 in Almeria, Biliran.

Participants from the Mamanwa tribe, an indigenous community in Biliran, learned about their roles, rights, privileges, and benefits as indigenous peoples, as well as the importance of preserving and properly processing tilapia. The training emphasized Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP) to ensure food safety and quality. During the practicum, the participants were divided into three groups. Each group successfully prepared Tilapia Noodles, Tilapia Patties, and four jars each of Tilapia in Oil, Tilapia in Tomato Sauce, and Tilapia in Brine. These hands-on activities gave participants practical skills in transforming tilapia into value-added products suitable for household consumption or commercial sale.

Trainees expressed their commitment to applying what they learned and sharing the knowledge with their tribes. Mr. Jay-ar B. Calinawan said, "We learned how to make Tilapia Noodles, Tilapia Patties, and Tilapia in Oil, Tomato Sauce, and Brine. We will apply these skills at home, which can also provide us with additional income." Ms. Marilyn C. Banagbanag added, "This training will benefit our tribe and even generate extra income. We are grateful to ATI for this opportunity." Likewise, Mr. Dondon L. Calinawan highlighted the practical impact: "When we harvest tilapia in the future, we can process some before selling, giving our tribe additional income. Thanks to ATI-RTC 8, the facilitators, and Resource Persons for this valuable training."

This initiative is expected to strengthen the skills of the indigenous communities, enabling them to add value to their harvests while promoting sustainable and profitable agri-enterprises.
