BAYBAY CITY, Leyte —Cattle production in the Philippines remains relatively small and largely backyard-based, unable to meet the country’s growing demand for beef. To address this gap, the Department of Agriculture (DA) is implementing the Livestock Economic Enterprise Development (LEED) Program, which provides grants for cattle and other livestock modules. As part of the 2026 National Livestock Program, the initiative aims to transform traditional backyard cattle raising into sustainable, profitable community enterprises through herd expansion and infrastructure support.
Agricultural extension workers (AEWs) play a vital role as frontliners in advancing cattle production and development. Recognizing their importance, the Agricultural Training Institute–Regional Training Center VIII (ATI-RTC 8) conducted a three-day training on Beef Cattle Production and Management to enhance the knowledge and skills of AEWs and project beneficiaries in handling cattle farm operations.
The training offered participants essential knowledge on the critical elements of successful and sustainable cattle projects. A key takeaway was the importance of establishing pasture areas ahead of livestock arrival to ensure sustainability. Preventive health care—such as routine vaccinations and deworming—was emphasized to reduce disease risks and minimize losses. Adequate housing and animal welfare were also highlighted as crucial factors for improved performance and reduced stress in cattle.
Record-keeping was underscored as an indispensable tool for assessing farm productivity and guiding management decisions. Hands-on activities allowed participants to prepare urea molasses mineral blocks (UMMB) and administer Vitamin A to cattle, reinforcing practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge.
For Ms. Jannele Adarayan, one of the participants, the training was a milestone. “This program enhances my fundamental knowledge and skills in beef cattle farming, enabling me to implement the project according to the standards and prerequisites of the beef cattle project,” she shared.
A total of 28 participants completed the Training on Beef Cattle Production and Management on April 21-23, 2026 at ATI-RTC 8, VSU Campus, Baybay City, Leyte.(With reports from APGoroy)
