In preparation for the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan (CFIDP) that will be in full implementation within the year, ATI Nueve conducted a staff development workshop in order to equip its staff with the knowledge and information needed to implement the program.
23 admin personnel and technical staff visited the Philippine Coconut Authority - Zamboanga Research Center (PCA-ZRC) in Zamboanga City last May 25, 2022, where they learned from resident experts and scientists about the current status of the country’s coconut industry as well as the methods and techniques in choosing and growing coconuts appropriate for specific use.
Along with the briefing was a tour where the staff learned about the different post-harvest facilities and coconut products. “…hopefully in this tour, you will learn that there is no such thing as waste product in coconut farming. Every part of the coconut tree can be utilized for production” says Engr. Clifford Tagactac, resident Science Research Specialist. The staff witnessed live demonstrations of coco sugar production, virgin coconut oil production, and briquet making. PCA also showcased the multiple coco coir products as well as the other uses of the parts of the coconut tree from building materials to food products.
Center Director Alicia Rose D. Nebreja expressed her gratitude towards PCA for accommodating ATI and its staff. “We are very thankful for the time and knowledge you shared to us. This event gave us a new perspective on the coconut industry in our country” she said.
CD Nebreja also hopes to have more fruitful collaborations in the future. “Hopefully in the upcoming years our agencies will engage in more projects together for the advancement of our coconut farmers and the Philippines coconut industry.” she closed.
The CFIDP is mandated by Republic Act 11524 or the Coconut Farmers and Industry Trust Fund Act, which allows the management and utilization of coconut levy fund.
