Chosen inmates of the Zamboanga del Sur Provincial Jail attended a seminar on urban agriculture conducted by the Agricultural Training Institute-Regional Training Center IX (ATI-RTC IX) on April 23, 2024. The seminar focused on practical techniques for urban agriculture, including organic fertilizer formulation and backyard poultry raising, and provided inmates with the knowledge to cultivate fresh produce within the jail's premises.
Mr. Julito B. Cordova, Training Specialist II, discussed urban agriculture. While Mr. Reynaldo B. Beduya, Training Specialist II, shared his expertise on Natural Farming Technology System (NFTS) and had a demo on preparing Fermented Fruit Juice (FFJ), Fermented Plant Juice (FPJ), and Fish Amino Acid (FAA).
This initiative not only promotes self-sufficiency for the inmates but also equips them with marketable skills they can utilize upon release. The ATI's expertise in urban agriculture methods empowers participants to grow vegetables, herbs, or even small fruit trees in a limited space.
The ATI has expressed its commitment to continuing its partnership with the provincial jail, offering ongoing support and guidance for the inmates' newly acquired urban agriculture endeavors. This collaboration fosters hope and rehabilitation within the jail walls while promoting sustainable food production practices in the community.
