Modern farming is no longer just about hard work in the fields, it’s about smart work, powered by the right tools and knowledge. With this in mind, the Agricultural Training Institute Regional Training Center IX (ATI-RTC IX) brought together 27 Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs) from Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Norte, Basilan, and Sulu Province for a five-day Retooling on Riding-Type Rice Machinery Operation – Batch 2 held on August 11–15, 2025, at Hotel Guillermo, Pagadian City.

The training aimed to do more than just introduce machines. It sought to transform the way AEWs guide farmers, giving them the skills to promote safe, efficient, and effective use of farm machinery while deepening their understanding of the Agriculture and Fisheries Mechanization Law (R.A. 10601).

Throughout the training, participants discussed the importance of mechanization in rice production and explored a wide range of topics: from the basics of farm tools and crop establishment to hands-on lessons in transplanter operation, safety practices, and troubleshooting. They also rolled up their sleeves for practical sessions on seedling preparation using the Dapog method, a technique that can be directly applied and shared with farmers.

The highlight of the program was the actual field practice, which took place at the Plando Demo Farm in Ramon Magsaysay, Zamboanga del Sur. The AEWs took turns operating advanced machinery such as the four-wheel drive tractor, riding-type transplanter, and rice combine harvester. For many, it was not just training but an empowering experience, proof that modern technology can make farming more efficient, less labor-intensive, and more rewarding.

Farm mechanization may not directly result in higher rice yields, but its advantages are undeniable. It allows crops to be established earlier, helping farmers maximize growing seasons. At the same time, it reduces labor costs, making rice production more affordable and sustainable. With the aid of machines, farm work becomes faster and more efficient, while also significantly lessening the physical strain on farmers. Together, these benefits make mechanization an essential step toward improving productivity and ensuring a more resilient agricultural sector.

In a time when many rural areas face labor shortages, mechanization offers a lifeline, ensuring that rice production keeps pace with demand. Still, success depends on tailoring technology to the unique socio-economic and ecological conditions of each farming community, a challenge that AEWs are now better equipped to address.

AEWs are more than just participants in this program, they are change agents. Acting as the bridge between government initiatives and farming communities, they bring with them the responsibility of transferring knowledge, sharing skills, and encouraging farmers to embrace mechanization. With their retooled expertise, they can now better support farmers in adapting to modern methods and overcoming the daily challenges of rice production.

For Engr. Sarha A. Sangkula of MAFAR-Sulu, the training was a meaningful learning experience.

“My major takeaways from this training are the AFMech Law, seed preparation, crop establishment, and the different types of machineries. These will be used and shared with fellow AEWs, most importantly with farmers and FCAs. The knowledge and wisdom acquired here will be practiced properly and diligently. Hoping that for future endeavors, we will be needing the assistance of ATI-9 to conduct more training.”

Her reflections echo the collective sentiment of many participants, an eagerness not only to apply what they learned but also to spread its benefits within their respective communities.

By the end of the training, one thing was clear: the future of rice farming lies in a balance between tradition and technology. Through initiatives like this, ATI-RTC IX reaffirms its commitment to building a more resilient, efficient, and farmer-friendly agricultural sector. With empowered AEWs at the forefront, farmers are never alone in the journey toward a modernized rice industry.
