PASAY City, Philippines—Our country’s most outstanding farmers, fisherfolk, institutions, scientists, and researchers were honored during the awarding ceremony of the finalists for the “50th Gawad Saka: Parangal sa mga Natatanging Magsasaka at Mangingisda”.
The Department of Agriculture (DA) led the recognition, held last May 26 at the Philippine Trade Training Center in Pasay City, of more than 100 national finalists for their hard work and big contributions to agriculture and fisheries in the country.
From six (6) categories and 23 subcategories in 2020, the Search has extended to nine (9) categories with 47 subcategories reflecting the program’s evolving commitment to inclusivity and sectoral diversity.
Over the years, Gawad Saka has expanded its scope to recognize not only individuals but also groups and cooperatives, solidifying its status as a prestigious symbol of excellence in the Philippine agricultural and fisheries community.
"To all our finalists—congratulations. Your hard work, passion, and impact in your communities have not gone unnoticed. You stand as shining examples of what it means to lead and serve through agriculture and fisheries”, Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) Director and Gawad Saka Vice-Chairperson Remelyn Recoter said in her message during the event.
Meanwhile, DA Secretary Francisco “Kiko” Tiu Laurel Jr. also delivered a message of inspiration emphasizing the importance of reviving the Gawad Saka. “Binalik natin ito ngayon para ma-recognize ang ating mga nagpeperform na magsasaka — to be an example to others, and to be role models to our younger generations”.
“This is a renewed promise to honor not just our farmers and fisherfolk but all stakeholders. And may their stories inspire, lead, and shape the future of our nation”, Sec Kiko added.
In addition, the Farmer Regional Executive Directors (FREDs) were recognized during the ceremony for their exceptional contributions in advancing agricultural programs and strengthening extension services across the regions.
More than a recognition of excellence and dedication, the Gawad Saka is a celebration of resilience, innovation, and unwavering commitment to advancing our nation’s food security and rural development.
The event was also attended by DA key officials, representatives from attached agencies and bureaus, regional directors, and private sector partners.
