DILIMAN, Quezon City — At a time when many young Filipinos are stepping away from farming, Patrick Tomonglay proves that agriculture can still offer purpose, innovation, and a promising future. Featured in Agri Asenso’s 233rd episode, this young farmer shows what it means to push boundaries in modern agriculture.

Patrick tends their 0.6-hectare family farm, inherited from his grandfather, where he grows bananas, dragon fruit, agarwood, and various fruit trees. His shift toward modern farming began in college when he built a DIY aquaponics system—using fish-tank water to grow vegetables sustainably.

His vision caught the attention of the Department of Agriculture. Through the Young Farmers Challenge, he received funding, mentorship, and access to training and networks that helped him scale up his aquaponics venture.

Patrick later qualified for the Young Filipino Farm Leaders Training Program in Japan (YFFLTPJ), where exposure to advanced farm technologies reshaped his perspective. “In Japan, machinery plays a big role in maximizing labor and time. It’s something we can apply here with the right support,” he shared.

After returning home, Patrick began applying what he learned. With help from local extension workers, he ventured into hydroponics and grape production and built a greenhouse to protect crops in their highland community. “We’re starting with 10 grape vines. It takes time, but with proper care and support, we’ll get there,” he said.

Patrick’s journey highlights the crucial role of agricultural extension—providing training, funding, and hands-on technical assistance that empower young farmers to innovate. From aquaponics to greenhouse grape farming, his story reflects how knowledge and collaboration can transform farming communities.

As he continues to expand his farm and share his learnings, Patrick grows more than food—he cultivates hope for a more resilient, tech-driven future in Philippine agriculture.
