NASUGBU, Batangas City – The Department of Agriculture (DA), through the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI), in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), held a Co-Design and Ideation Workshop for the Adapting Philippine Agriculture to Climate Change (APA) Project on September 22–26 in Batangas City.

The APA Project seeks to move Philippine agriculture from high vulnerability to climate resilience by scaling up adaptation and mitigation measures, strengthening disaster resilience, and aligning with national climate commitments toward a low-carbon economy.

The workshop focused on developing and localizing modules on Climate-Resilient Agriculture (CRA) and Climate Information Services (CIS). These modules will serve as a curriculum track for trainers, facilitators, extension workers, and farmers, forming the foundation for future capacity-building programs.

ATI Deputy Director Antonieta Arceo emphasized the importance of localization:

“We are learning one important issue—localization. How do we make climate and weather advisories more understandable and useful to farmers in their own contexts?”

She added that the improved CRA curriculum can build on existing programs, the strong network of implementing agencies, and the practices already adopted by farmers and communities.

Farmers will play a central role in co-creating knowledge products, ensuring materials are practical, relevant, and grounded in local realities.

The event brought together key stakeholders from government and non-governmental organizations, including:

  • International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR)
  • Rice Watch Action Network, Inc. (R1)
  • International Rice Research Institute (IRRI)
  • DA agencies such as BPI, PhilRice, ATI Training Centers, FOS, CRAO, NOAP, and the 4Ks Program
  • Regional Field Offices (II, V, VI, and XI)
  • DOST-PAGASA Central Office and Regional Services Division
  • National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP)
  • FAO
