The 3-day training on urban container household gardening for PWDs concluded with a resounding success on October 13, 2023, held at the ATI Hall, El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental.
Twenty-five (25) PWDs from different barangays in El Salvador City completed the six topics prepared for them, and graduated from the said activity.
Training Specialist III Teodosia D. Jaraba, explained the salient features of the rights and privileges of PWDs and the importance of urban container household gardening. Technical Support Staff Gia Joy B. Lusterio, discussed the production guide for selected solanaceous, cucurbit, and root crops.
Several topics were discussed during the training, such as Square Foot Gardening and Black Soldier Fly Production and Utilization by LSA owner Honorio S. Cervantes of the New Square Foot Gardening Farm; Production Guide on selected Legumes and Crucifers, and Composting/Vermicomposting by Technical Support Staff Bryan Jay V. Cabugwason, and Management of Common Pests and Diseases of Vegetables by Technical Support Staff Karlo Jayvert R. Cardente.
The participants also visited the Learning Site for Agriculture (LSA) on Square Foot Gardening owned and managed by Mr. Cervantes in Cagayan de Oro City. The participants were able to experience and see how square foot gardening and Black Soldier Fly (BSF) production work.
Mr. Ramil E. Enomar, a participant from Molugan, El Salvador City, expressed his gratitude and impression for the activity. "Ako mapasalamaton sa ATI sa oportunidad nga kami makahibalo sa pagpananom gamit ang mga container bisan pa kami PWD. Nga sa tabang niini kami makasugod og pagtanom sa tagsa-tags namo ka panimalay", he said.
The participants who completed the training were given starter kits consisting of seeds, organic fertilizer, compost materials, and tools, as they are expected to grow crops in their respective households, applying what they have learned from the training.# (Christian Derrick Casite)
