More farmers train to become competent seed growers

One of the major goals of the Department of Agriculture is to have a continuous and reliable supply of high-quality inbred rice seeds for positive long-term impacts on seed security, and farm productivity and these directly contribute to attaining rice sufficiency in the country. Seed growers play a vital role in attaining this goal for the distribution and production of high-quality inbred rice seeds.

A total of forty-six potential seed growers in Region-10 participated in the 2-batches of Training on Inbred Rice Seed Production and Certification for Potential Seed Growers conducted by the Agricultural Training Institute Region-10 for the year 2023. Participants underwent 5-day training with modules on understanding the Rice Tarrification Law, Seed Production, and Seed Certification. The training aims to develop potential famers to apply appropriate seed production practices and to become accredited seed growers in the Region.

Personnel from the Bureau of Plant Industry-National Seed Quality Control Services 10 shared their expertise on lecturing the mechanics, policies, and guidelines on seed certification. They emphasized the important role of a seed grower in achieving a continuous and reliable supply of high-quality seed. Part of their activity also includes a hands-on activity on roguing to ensure the purity of the seeds produced. They also had field visits at PhilRice CMU to see their storage facility, know the importance of proper seed storage, and maintain its physiological condition from harvesting to planting.
