Initao, MISAMIS ORIENTAL---a Training of Trainers (TOT) on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) was recently spearheaded by the center through the Partnership and Accreditation Services (PAS)as part of the Institute’s initiative under the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan (CFIDP).
Attended by 25 extension workers, coconut farmer leaders, and LSA partners in the region, the said capacity-building activity focused on food safety measures and assure the quality of coconut-based products and by-products, while keeping high regard for environmental protection as well as workers’ health, safety, and welfare.
Additionally, the TOT is conducted at the regional levels to equip various stakeholders such as the Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs) from the Local Government Units (LGUs) and technical staff from other implementing agencies. Likewise, the farmer-leaders and Learning Site for Agriculture (LSA) operators were trained as well. These stakeholders will form part of the new pool of trainers equipped with the proper knowledge and skills on GAP. They were expected to share information effectively, respond to participants questions proactively, and lead activities that will reinforce the training. A coaching and mentoring session of the new batch of trainers in delivering topics on GAP are also expected from them.
As part of their practicum activity, the participants successfully conducted seed nuts selection, nursery establishment, farm layouting, planting, fertilizer application, and estimating copra yield.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) was directed to enter into a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the concerned implementing agencies, and among them is the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI). The ATI is mandated to work in providing training to coconut farmers and their families.
The farmers and fishers are considered the main producers of agricultural products, and are encouraged to implement best management practices that will help reduce the risks of microbial contamination and ensure the quality of their produce. With the increasing demand for safe and quality food products, being GAP-certified will help their products to become competitive in the local and international market.
