Reminiscing Filipino Women Who Shaped History: An Activity in support of the National Women’s Month Celebration

ATI compound, Poblacion, EL SALVADOR CITY---In support of the 2024 National Women’s Month, ATI-RTC X conducts an activity to reminisce about Filipino women who have played a significant role in shaping the history of the Philippines.  Due recognition and importance are given to these women who have been involved in various movements, organizations, and uprisings, contributing to the eventual end of US colonial rule in the Philippines.  Women's participation in the struggle for independence included various forms of activism, and even engaging in armed resistance. 

In view of this month-long celebration, a kick-off activity was held on March 8, 2024, at ATI-RTC X compound, El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental.  This is aligned that March 8 is National Women’s Day and March is Women’s Role in History Month.  This activity aims to value and highlight the significant role of Filipino women in society with the hope that they can inspire present generations of women to break barriers towards women empowerment, make an impact, and contribute to society positively. ATI-RTC X conducts this activity to recognize women’s contributions to gender equality and women empowerment, these women who paved the way for a greater, brighter society for all across genders and ages.

The month-long celebration is spearheaded by Center Director Maria Lydia and OIC-Assistant Center Director Noemi Beth G. Macario. In her message, Director Echavez encouraged the active participation of all staff in joining this Women’s Month celebration. She calls for a collective responsibility for gender equality not only for women but should involve everyone. She supports women empowerment and emphasizes the importance of equal rights and opportunities for women.

Training Specialist III and GAD Point Person Teodosia D. Jaraba discussed the topics on Introduction to Gender and Development Concepts and Introduction to Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression, and Sexual Characteristics.  She also presents the activity overview and reminds all the activities that are lined up in support of the National Women’s Month celebration. Among others, she mentioned wearing of purple polo shirt every Friday throughout March to symbolize solidarity with women’s empowerment and gender equality; the use of the All-Women Cast Lupang Hinirang video during training for March; exhibit of National Women’s Month banner of support and uploading its digital version in ATI X official website and social media accounts; register to the AgriStoryahay sa ATI on March 22, 2024 at 10:00 in the morning featuring a women entrepreneur via Facebook live; culminating activity will be on March 25, 2024.

Highlights of this kick-off activity are the Search for Best Women’s Corner showcasing look-alike models of Filipino women, with the inspiring slogan (Juana Says) and display in the corner showing creativity and innovation relevant to the theme “WE for Gender Equality and Inclusive Society”.

Group 1 showcased Marcela Agoncillo with the slogan: “Pula para sa Katapangan ng mga Kababaihan, Asul para sa Kalayaan, Puti sa sa Kadalisayan, Dilaw para sa tapang at inspirasyon ng mga kababaihan na nagsilbing ilaw at pag asa sa Lipunan”.

Group2 showcased Babaylan with the slogan: “Lipunang Patas: Kababaihan sa Bagong Pilipinas.  BABAE, hindi babae lang.

Group 3 showcased Dr. Fe del Mundo with the slogan: “Pagpapalakas at Pagkakapantay-pantay para kay Juana: EmpowHer!

Group 4 showcased Teresa Magbanua with the slogan: “Siempre, Babae Ako! (submitted by: Teodosia D. Jaraba, Training Specialist III)
