Training on Urban Container Household Gardening for PWDs Held

Poblacion, EL SALVADOR CITY---A Training on Urban Container Household Gardening was conducted recently at the ATI-RTC X Training Hall, El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental. Twenty-six PWDs and PWD stakeholder participants from El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental successfully completed the training.

“We are very thankful for this training because not only will it capacitate the PWDs, but also inspire change within the community. It is a chance for the PWDs to be more productive members of the community. We would also like to thank the center for the positive response to this purposeful initiative.” Ms. Janolia N. Castillo, Head Designate of Persons with Disability Affairs Office said in her inspiring message.

During the training proper, the rationale was presented by Training Specialist-III Teodosia D. Jaraba, who was also the project officer for the training. Training preliminaries were facilitated with the lecture on Salient Features on the Rights and Privileges of PWDs delivered by Ms. Jaraba. She discussed the topic on Urban Container Household Gardening during the afternoon session.

The participants were engaged in the participative lecture on Production Guide of Selected Solanaceous Crops, Cucurbits Crops and Root Crops delivered by Technical Support Staff Gia Joy B. Lusterio.

On the second day of training, the lecture in Square Foot Gardening and Black Soldier Fly (BSF) Production and Utilization was delivered by Mr. Honorio S. Cervantes, a Learning Site for Agriculture (LSA) owner/operator of the New Square Foot Gardening and BSF Farm.  Mr. Bryan Jay V. Cabugwason, Technical Support Staff of ATI-RTC X delivered his lecture on the Production Guide of Selected Legumes and Crucifers. He also discussed about composting. Mr. Karlo Jayvert R. Cardente, Technical Support Staff of ATI-RTC X lectured on the Management of Common Insect Pests and Diseases of Vegetables.

The participants together with the RPs and TMT visited the New Square Foot Gardening and BSF Farm, located in Pagatpat, Cagayan de Oro City. During the visit, the participants were able to see a demonstration farm on square foot garden and on the production and utilization of black soldier fly. Mr. Cervantes briefed the participants about the occurring activities of his farm.

During the closing ceremony, three participants expressed their impressions for the whole duration of the training.  As can be gleaned, they were all interested in the learnings they have gained from the training course.  They also expressed their gratitude to the center, RPs, facilitators, and their co-participants. Special awards were given to the participants with the highest increment in learning and also to the ones with the highest score in the pre-test.
