Starlyn Binahon Pasco, an Educational Assistance for the Youth in Agriculture (EAsY Agri) scholar of the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) graduated Magna Cum Laude from Central Mindanao University (CMU) recently. Pasco, who hails from Impasugong, Bukidnon took up Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Major in Agricultural Extension. A proud daughter of a farmer, Pasco is among the 11 scholars who graduated with Latin Honors.

“I believe that being the eldest child of the family, I take the responsibility of following my father's footsteps. My father is a farmer and I could have been prouder of myself if it meant helping him in his work that sustains our family. Opportunities come only once so grab it and grip it hard. Indeed, how blessed I am to have been given the opportunity by the ATI.

I have taken this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity because I believe it will not only aid me financially in my studies but also the advantage and greater opportunities I could get involved in agriculture soon.” Starlyn said, sharing why she took an agriculture course, and the opportunity to avail of the scholarship.

The EAsY Agri Program of the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) is designed to support smallholder farmers and fishers by offering scholarship opportunities to pursue higher education in agriculture-related fields. This program aims to enhance the socio-economic status of families involved in agriculture and fisheries by providing access to quality education and training.

By supporting the education of smallholder farmers and fishers, the EAsY Agri Program contributes to the improvement and competitiveness of Philippine agriculture. This ultimately helps in achieving food security and alleviating the socio-economic challenges faced by families in the agriculture and fisheries sector. The program plays a crucial role in empowering these communities by providing them with the necessary skills and knowledge to improve their livelihoods and contribute to the country's agricultural development.

With more scholars and agriculture graduates produced by state universities, the said program also intends to produce agricultural professionals and new breeds of farmers with agribusiness enterprises. Center Director Maria Lydia A. Echavez and Development Management Officer II (DMO-II) Jhoylie Mae Rosales-Caumban serve as focal person and alternate focal person respectively in ATI Northern Mindanao.

“My goal before was solely to focus on working for my family after I graduated. But now, as an aspiring professional agriculturist, I have seen how vast the change I could make in this field if I work for my country. It made me realize that agriculture is not only a short-term goal, but a lifetime investment to yourself, your family, and to the country.

After I finish my studies, I plan on working here specifically working on my beloved Impasugong and sharing my knowledge not just with our farmers but also with the youth to get involved and raise their interest in farming.”, Starlyn said further.

Other EAsY Agri scholars who graduated include Jose Mei W. Barrio - Cum Laude, Junnard S. Coronel - Cum Laude, Alchem G. Daluniag - Cum Laude, Kelly Jane P. Sudario - Cum Laude, Jenerose D. Callejas - Cum Laude, Careen C. Elloren - Cum Laude, Ana Rose O. Lapa - Cum Laude, Irish T. Gabac - Cum Laude, Rechilyn C. Llamera and Rhea T. Dukinlay.

Central Mindanao University (CMU), known for its Center of Excellence in Agriculture Education, is proud to have Pasco as an alumnus. Her achievement serves as an inspiration to current and future students, stressing the importance of academic rigor and dedication. Pasco's story is a testament to the power of education in shaping her as a young professional, and in setting her future bright in the field of agriculture.

When pressed about what made her succeed in the academe and graduate with flying colors, “Studying diligently and focusing on one goal is the key. We should seek to excel in everything we do, with humility that knowledge only comes from God. If we are faithful to the work God entrusted to us (that as students, we should focus on our studies and acknowledge Him in every way), He will be gracious and will prove Himself able to do the impossible possible. And finally, a graduate and a degree holder all by God's grace. I am truly and deeply humbled by this achievement, and I want to acknowledge the support of my parents, and the opportunity given to me by ATI to be one of the scholars. To God be all the glory!”, Pasco concluded.
