PANABO CITY, Davao del Norte– A total of 31 agricultural extension workers (AEWs) and farmer leaders from the Davao region successfully completed a 10-day Training of Trainers on Corn Production and Management, Harvest, and Post-Harvest Handling on May 13-24, 2024 at the ATI-RTC XI Training Hall.
The training provided participants with advanced knowledge and practical skills in corn production technology equipping them to become effective trainers, facilitators, and resource persons in Farmers Field Schools focused on Corn Production and Management.
Throughout the 10-day training, participants were immersed in a wide range of topics crucial for successful corn production. The curriculum included an overview of the corn industry at both national and local levels, the importance of Digital Agriculture and e-Extension in corn production, and good agricultural practices. In addition, transformational leadership, the morphology and growth stages of corn, and comprehensive corn management practices were thoroughly covered.
Other significant areas of focus included Agro-Ecosystem Analysis (AESA) for decision-making, pest and disease control, nutrient management, and insecticide resistance. Participants also learned about harvesting and post-harvest operations, feed formulation, marketing strategies, farm record-keeping, planning, and budgeting. Essential soft skills, such as presentation and facilitation techniques for conducting effective farmers field schools, were also covered.
Moreover, the AEWs earned 32 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) units for agriculture upon completion of the training.
By equipping AEWs and farmer leaders with the latest corn production technologies, the training empowers them to utilize corn and its by-products effectively. This knowledge will enhance their farming practices and enable them to create home-based businesses, generating additional family income and contributing to community economic development.
