STA. MARIA, Davao Occidental– As part of the Bantay ASF sa Barangay (BABay ASF) Program, 28 representatives from various Barangay Local Government Units (BLGUs) in the municipality successfully completed a two-day Training on Specimen Collection for Barangay Biosecurity Officers (BBOs) and Agricultural Extension Workers (AEWs) held on November 6-7, 2024 at Barangay Basiawan.

The training aimed to provide participants with essential skills and knowledge for effective specimen collection and handling to aid in African Swine Fever (ASF) prevention and control efforts within their communities.

During the course, participants received an overview and updates on ASF, as well as an in-depth understanding of the Bantay ASF sa Barangay project. They also reviewed guidelines on swine movement and biosecurity audit protocols. Training on biosafety and biosecurity measures for field responders, as well as sample collection and handling techniques, prepared participants for the challenges they may face in managing ASF. In addition, the Livestock Industry Insurance Program was introduced to provide participants with valuable information on the available support and insurance benefits for the livestock sector.

A hands-on activity in blood sample collection from swine was guided by Dr. John Lesther D. Lu, DVM. This practical session covered essential protocols for animal restraint, preparation, sample collection techniques, and handling procedures to ensure the safe and effective management of ASF response efforts.

The training was facilitated by Senior Agriculturist and Project Officer Omarbliss B. Dalam, PhD, from ATI-RTC XI; Veterinarian II Dr. John Lesther D. Lu from the Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory of the Department of Agriculture XI; and Provincial Office Head Robert F. Quijano from PCIC Malita, Davao Occidental. Mr. Quijano also introduced participants to insurance programs and benefits for the livestock sector, highlighting the government’s commitment to supporting the industry amidst ASF-related challenges.

Key officials, including Provincial Veterinarian Nestor V. Barroga, Sr., and Municipal Agriculturist Wendell G. Albasin, attended the opening and closing ceremonies to show their support for these vital efforts in strengthening local communities against ASF.

Since the initial ASF outbreak in Davao Occidental in 2019, the disease has had a significant impact on local pig farmers and the regional swine industry. Despite government initiatives to revitalize the industry, a recent resurgence of ASF has prompted local authorities, especially in Davao Occidental, to strengthen biosecurity measures to contain the virus.

With the completion of this training, BBOs and AEWs are now equipped for their essential role in ASF containment, helping to safeguard their communities and contribute to the stability of the regional livestock economy.
