Cagape’s Crisp Green, supported by the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI), was showcased at the Davao Agri Trade Expo 2024 on September 20 at the SMX Convention Center, SM Lanang Premier, Davao City.
The event, themed “Agriculture 4.0: Transforming Agribusiness in the Digital Age,” spotlighted innovations in modern farming. Ms. Eleanor Cagape, a participant in ATI's programs, promoted urban farming, focusing on hydroponics as a sustainable solution for city-based agriculture. Her presentation centered on the Nutrient Film Technique (NFT), a method of soilless farming.
NFT offers a resource-efficient approach that addresses common challenges in urban farming, such as limited space and water usage. This technique allows farmers to control environmental factors, resulting in improved crop productivity.
Cagape emphasized the benefits of hydroponics, particularly year-round lettuce production. The system also offers higher yields compared to traditional farming, maximizing the potential of smaller urban spaces.
Another key advantage is water efficiency, as hydroponics uses significantly less water than conventional farming methods. This makes it ideal for areas where water resources are limited.
With ATI’s support, Cagape’s advocacy for hydroponic systems contributes to enhancing food safety, improving urban farmer livelihoods, and promoting a more sustainable agricultural model.
The event, organized by the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc., also featured a technical seminar on Agriculture Livelihood Opportunities to empower urban farmers and promote food sustainability.
