The growing popularity of urban farming can be dated back some decades ago. The government’s efforts to ensure food security remained steadfast in providing the needed support mechanisms to keep our important role towards sustainable development. With this, the Agricultural Training Institute-Regional Training Center XI through the initiative of Center Director Dante G. Esguerra, implemented the Urban Container Gardening project in the Center, which is in line to the present administration’s mandates on food availability and accessibility.
Container gardening is the practice of growing edible plants exclusively in containers instead of directly planting them on the ground. Green leafy vegetables and fruit vegetables can be seen grown in tin cans, pots, sacks and plastic bottles along the entrance of the Center.
“The idea of this urban garden does not only seek for promotion of good nutrition, but it contributes bigger to food sufficiency and greening of the city,” CD Esguerra stated. He also mentioned that the project will most likely encourage the youth, particularly the 4-H, to appreciate urban farming and to adopt organic farming method in their communities. This will also encourage and inspire the nearby households to do vegetable gardening in their backyard.
Among the vegetables grown in containers that can be found in the Center are chili, cabbage, broccoli, eggplant, onion leaves, kangkong, and alugbati
The said project has started its implementation on March 2017, as soon as Mr. Dante Esguerra assumed the position of Center Director.
