NORTHERN MINDANAO— To keep livestock extensionists updated on the latest programs, technologies, and innovations, the ATI-RTC XI organized an Experienced-Based Enhancement program for 23 livestock extension workers in the Davao Region. This included field visits to various Learning Sites for Agriculture (LSA) and government institutions.
The journey began at the Philippine Carabao Center at Central Mindanao University (PCC-CMU) in Maramag, Bukidnon, where Center Director Lowell Paraguas, DVM, welcomed the participants. They toured facilities for buffaloes, including the breeder area, nursery, and milking facility, gaining insights into feeding systems and management practices.
Next, the group visited LnM Diversified Farm in Cabanglasan, Bukidnon. Farm owner and LSA Cooperator Leah L. Salvaleon introduced various farm operations, including goat, swine, and chicken production, and highlighted waste management practices using goat urine as fertilizer.
The National Beef Cattle Research & Development Center in Dalwangan, Bukidnon, was the next stop. Center Chief Luisito M. Avante discussed their programs and technologies. Then, participants toured the facility, learning about cattle breeds and semen collection practices.
At Spring Dairy Farm in Impasug-ong, Bukidnon, farm owner Andre Paulo O. Paraguya shared his dairy cattle management practices, explaining their milk and meat production processes. Participants observed the farm's feed bank, consisting mainly of silage.
The group then visited Cervantes Square Foot Urban Organic Gardening and Black Soldier Fly Production in Cagayan de Oro City. Farm owner Honorio S. Cervantes demonstrated urban farming technology and Black Soldier Fly production, emphasizing its use as livestock feed and organic fertilizer.
At Arca Goat Farm in Cagayan de Oro, farm owner Albert Arca presented his Saanen goat housing facility and discussed challenges in goat farming, particularly feeding management. Participants learned about sustainable pasture areas and proper feed utilization.
They continued their journey at Julimon's Nature Farm, where Farm Manager Drexell Maghanoy explained their livestock farming system, including chicken, sheep, goat, and cattle production. Key insights were gained on biosafety measures, feed management, animal health care, breeding, and the use of probiotics.
The final visit was to ATI-RTC X in El Salvador, Misamis Oriental. Participants were briefed on the center's programs and activities before touring the premises.
These field visits and hands-on activities offered extensionists valuable firsthand insights into modern and sustainable farming practices. It is imperative for livestock extension workers to remain updated on recent developments through such activities, enabling them to impart best management practices essential for advancing the livestock sector in Davao Region.
