The first day of the Training of Trainers (TOT) on the Digital Farmers Program (DFP) started today at ATI-RTC XI in Panabo City. This three-day training, running from September 17-19, 2024, brought 30 participants from cacao cooperatives across the Davao Region. The goal is to help them learn digital skills that they can pass on to local farmers. This marks the pilot DFP for cacao cooperatives, in partnership with Smart Communications and MEDA.
Sir Janoz Laquihon, CEO of LAECS, welcomed everyone and acknowledged the guests from various cooperatives and associations, including representatives from CALFAMCO, CASCOFACO, MAMPCO, MAGROW, AEC, LAMPCO, Kapalong Cooperative, MAFAMCCO, KMPC, FARDECO, TABECO, BARBCO, MAGSIGE, MADIELO, and LUFAMCO.
Mr. Norsaeb Lumandong, Admin Officer from ATI RTC XI, gave a powerful opening message, setting a positive tone for the training. This was followed by a video message from Roderick Ballones, Project Director of MEDA, stressing the importance of using digital tools in farming. MEDA has partnered with the program by sponsoring smartphones for each representative to use throughout the training. Both speakers emphasized that the participants should share what they learn with other farmers.
Mx. Marvelous Dainty Camilo led a fun session to break the ice and set expectations for the training. Participants from different cooperatives got to know each other, which created a friendly atmosphere in the group.
Ms. Assel Mapayo, Information Officer II of ATI-RTC XI, introduced DFP 101 andย explained why the training is important. She highlighted how it will spread digital knowledge to more farmers, improving their productivity and market reach. The goal is to help farmers adapt to technology like social media and farming applications. She also shared an overview of the Digital Farmers Program and explained the role of trainers in helping farmers understand and use digital tools.
Moreover, Ms. Baby Glace Lanit, ATI XI Technical Staff, promoted the e-extension for agriculture and fisheries website where the participants may learn how to access agricultural courses, navigate the website, and get there free certifications.ย Mr. Janoz Laquihon concluded the day with a talk on sustainable cacao farming practices. He emphasized the need to balance technology with environmentally friendly farming, helping protect the land while increasing productivity.
